Course Description

The future landscape of the Internet is changing at a dramatic speed, shaping our reality around new interaction concepts and ways of solving common problems. This is not something new, as the Internet always had the dual capacity of improving our life, and then making obsolete a great amount of processes, and habits. We currently use laptops and smartphones as a digital extension of the self, allowing access to a vast amount of information and systems. With the appearance of social networks, the distance between people was dramatically reduced, which had a direct impact on our relations. The next target are all the devices that surround us, or that we use, as well as the spaces and buildings.

The internet of things consists in the assimilation of everything that surrounds us, that we use, or that we do. Devices are becoming more intelligent as they become connected to management platforms. Processes rely on digital solutions, creating auditable traces that can be used to increase quality as well as optimization processes. Physical characteristics from our cars and houses are increasingly monitored, allowing to make decisions based on hard data and not extrapolations. Ultimately, all these entities can interact with each other and act in coordination, providing enhanced usability.

This course will have a full stack approach towards the concepts and technologies driving the Internet of Things, ranging from sensors to IoT platforms and APIs, not forgetting the aspects related with communications and security. All backed by professionals and academics with strong experience with these solutions and scenarios.

BEST Aveiro

BEST Aveiro is one of the 94 local groups of the Board of European Students of Technology (BEST) and one of the most active organisations in the University of Aveiro. The main goal of BEST is to develop students of technology, bringing closer our three stakeholders: students, universities and partners, therefore providing three main services: complementary education, educational involvement and career support. The organisation aims to develop students and their working capacities on an international level, creating opportunities and empowering diversity. To fulfill this purpose, the 50 members of BEST Aveiro strive to organise about 12 events per year, including an Engineering Competition, a Symposium on Technology, a Seasonal Course and much more, reaching more than 800 students.

City of Aveiro

Known as the Venice of Portugal, Aveiro is surrounded by salt-flats, beaches and lagoons and dominated by the Central Canal running through town, the Ria de Aveiro. Once a big sea port, Aveiro lies in a region of valleys cut by mountains and fertile lagoon plains.

The city of Aveiro is crossed by canals, which give it quite an individual character, and of all the boats seen in the area, the moliceiro is the most elegant, being perfectly lined, painted with bright colours and with often ingenious and humorous decorations.

For those who love sweets, Aveiro has a well known pastry called ovos moles, made from egg yolks and sugar.

Aveiro also has a rich culture and throughout the city, there are various museums, cathedrals and other monuments representing the beautiful history of the city and even Portugal.
